Heating the Waves: Biomass at Chessgrove Swim

Burning Biomass for a Carbon-Neutral Future

Chessgrove invested over £1 million in biomass technology in 2005, an investment that paid off remarkably. The comprehensive biomass system, fueled by flammable plant matter, makes them nearly carbon-neutral. Harnessing waste material from industrial and agricultural production, they ensure efficiency and reduce their ecological impact.

Why Biomass?

Biomass, generated inadvertently through various industries, becomes a potent fuel source. Their in-house woodchipping company, Chessgrove Woodchip, ensures sustainability by using wood that cannot be repurposed for other needs. This commitment allows them to avoid 2,500 liters of diesel fuel per week, equating to a CO² reduction of 327,600 kgs annually.

Woodchip Wonderland: Sustainability in Every Splinter

Fews, their wood-chipping service, produces biomass woodchip from sustainable sources within a six-mile radius of their head office. The team, affectionately known as the "wombles" of the industry, sources wood from industrial sites, forest clearances, tree surgeons, farm waste, and more. This commitment not only fuels our boilers but also avoids wastage of wood that would otherwise be discarded.

Solar Power: Illuminating Tomorrow

Capturing Sunbeams: Chessgrove's Solar Power Commitment

In 2015, Chessgrove extended its environmental commitment with a £300k investment in solar power. Panels on office and warehouse roofs generate 2400kw/hr per week, meeting all their electricity needs and returning surplus to the grid.

Solar Storage Technology: The Future of Power

The next step involves installing batteries on-site, aiming to be "off-grid" when the technology reaches robustness. A £155k investment in 2023 increased their capacity, allowing them to monitor electricity generation and CO² reduction through a dedicated app.

What Leading the Wave in Environmental Sustainability Means in Reality: Calculating Our Impact

Using solar power helps them avoid significant CO² emissions. With 355 kW/h power generated, they annually avoid 71,000 kgs of CO². Through their sustained efforts in biomass and solar technology, Chessgrove Swim stands as a testament to unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

Chessgrove Swim is not just a swim destination; it's a commitment to sustainability. From efficient biomass systems to solar-powered initiatives, every stroke in their pool reflects a stroke for a greener future. Join them in our journey towards sustainability, where every splash is a step towards environmental conservation.
